What the heck is EFT?!

I get it…EFT is still a relatively unknown practice, and you might have a few questions. Check out the information below to help you understand why EFT is so effective and how it can help you achieve your goals!

The basics

  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), sometimes called ‘tapping,” is a somatic practice that combines gentle tapping on acupressure points with intentional language to process emotions and release limiting beliefs stored in the body.

Instead of only talking through a problem, EFT works with the nervous system. While we tap, we acknowledge what you’re actually feeling in the moment. This helps the body regulate and allows emotional patterns that have been stuck beneath the surface to begin shifting.

Many people come to EFT after years of personal growth work because they’ve already developed awareness, but know their nervous system has to catch up with their mind.

  • Our nervous system stores experiences in our life that were stressful, including conflict, or were emotionally charged in both the body and subconscious mind.

EFT works by gently stimulating specific acupressure points while bringing awareness to the emotions, beliefs, or memories stored by our nervous system. This combination helps calm our body’s stress response while allowing the brain to process the experience in a new way.

Being able to process these experiences is what helps us unblock limiting beliefs and other roadblocks that have kept us from living as our authentic selves in the life we imagine.

  • Yes! EFT has been studied for more than two decades, with over 100 published studies examining its effectiveness.

Research has shown significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and emotional distress after EFT interventions. Some studies have even observed measurable decreases in cortisol levels after a single session.

While the experience of EFT can feel simple, the shifts it creates often reflect real changes in how the nervous system processes stress and emotional memories.

Here are some research papers if you’re interested in diving deeper:

  • EFT can support sooo many issues that would be hard to keep to one page. Simply put, if it’s an issue you experience in your everyday life, it can probably be helped with EFT.

Many clients seek EFT for things like:

    • chronic stress or burnout

    • people pleasing and overgiving

    • feeling unsafe receiving more in life or business

    • repeating relationship patterns

    • anxiety or emotional overwhelm

    • limiting beliefs about worth, visibility, or success

People typically already understand these patterns intellectually, but EFT helps address the emotional layer that keeps them repeating.

  • Most limiting beliefs are rooted in emotional experiences stored in our subconscious. This is why you can logically know a belief isn’t true and still feel it in your body.

EFT helps access the emotional experiences that originally shaped those beliefs while calming our nervous system. As the emotional charge around those experiences shifts, beliefs naturally change.

This is why EFT can be so powerful for people who feel like they’ve “done the mindset work” but still feel stuck on a hamster wheel.

  • The tapping points used in EFT are connected to the body’s stress response system.

When these points are stimulated while bringing awareness to an emotional experience, the nervous system often begins to shift out of a heightened stress state and into a more regulated one.

This is why many people feel calmer during tapping and why it can create space for emotional processing that might otherwise feel overwhelming.

  • This is SO frequently asked because EFT seems “simple” from an outsider’s perspective.

Studies on EFT have shown meaningful improvements in emotional well-being, including reductions in anxiety, depression, and stress. In some research, participants experienced more than a 50% reduction in anxiety symptoms after tapping interventions.

What many people find surprising is that EFT doesn’t rely on forcing positive thinking. Instead, it helps the nervous system safely process the emotions and experiences that shaped those patterns in the first place. And when we can process them, their power to keep us from our goals, dreams, and aspirations fades away, allowing us to step into our authentic selves and live the life we’ve always wanted.

  • Most people describe EFT as calming and grounding.

During tapping, you gently tap on points on the face and upper body while speaking about what you’re experiencing emotionally. As the nervous system settles, people often notice the intensity of their feelings softening.

It’s also normal to experience things that happen when our body is relaxed, including yawning or stomach gurgling, during sessions (I’m personally a HUGE yawner when I do EFT for myself).

New insights, memories, or perspectives coming to the surface are normal, too. Many clients leave sessions feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected to themselves.

  • The most annoying answer ever…it depends.

Some people notice a shift in emotional intensity within a single session. For deeper patterns reinforced over many years, the process may unfold gradually over several sessions.

Rather than forcing change, EFT allows the nervous system to process experiences at a pace that feels safe and sustainable.

  • Yes! Many people use EFT specifically to help regulate stress and anxiety.

When the nervous system perceives a threat — whether it’s happening in the moment or remembered from the past — our body activates a stress response. Tapping helps ease that response while allowing the underlying emotions to be processed more safely.

Over time, this can reduce the intensity of emotional triggers and create greater steadiness in daily life.

  • Nope! EFT is still not super mainstream and can bring about curiosity and skepticism alike. How can just using your hands create meaningful change?

The science behind EFT helps make it more accessible to people who aren’t as “woo woo,” and rationalize why it works biologically (if science is more your lane, I highly recommend looking at the research studies linked above!).

  • Yep! EFT is often called “tapping therapy” because it involves tapping on acupressure points while focusing on emotional experiences.

About 1:1 EFT

  • Tapping videos can be a wonderful introduction to EFT.

However, working together one-on-one allows the process to become much more personalized. In sessions, we follow the exact language your nervous system responds to and explore the beliefs, memories, or emotional patterns unique to your experience.

Your nervous system tends to respond most strongly to the way you naturally process emotions. When tapping reflects that language, the shifts can be deeper and more precise.

  • Self-guided tapping can be powerful, but many people eventually reach a point where it feels like they’re circling the same themes.

This often happens because deeper patterns live in the subconscious and can be difficult to see clearly on our own. A practitioner can help identify blind spots, uncover root beliefs, and guide the process when new layers emerge.

  • Not necessarily.

While some sessions naturally touch on past experiences, the focus is always on what feels safe and relevant in the moment. Many shifts happen simply by working with the emotions and beliefs that are present now.

The pace of the work always follows the nervous system.

  • You don’t need to prepare anything in particular. It can help to come with a general idea of what you’d like support with, but the session will guide us toward what feels most relevant.

  • In our first session, we begin by exploring the pattern or challenge you’d like support with.

From there, we identify the emotions, beliefs, or experiences connected to it. Once we have clarity around the root of the pattern, we begin tapping while gently processing what comes up.

Many people leave their first session feeling calmer, more grounded, and with a new understanding of what has been driving the pattern.

  • Each session is collaborative and unfolds naturally based on what arises.

We typically begin by identifying the emotional pattern you’re experiencing. As we talk, we follow the threads that reveal the beliefs or experiences connected to it.

Once we begin tapping, the nervous system often starts to settle, which allows deeper insights and emotional shifts to occur.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on the person and the pattern we’re exploring.

Some people experience meaningful shifts in one session, while others choose to work together over time to unwind deeper beliefs and long-standing emotional patterns.

The process isn’t about rushing change — it’s about allowing the nervous system to integrate it.

  • Yes! All sessions are private and confidential.
